In the previous blog ( Read here ) I talked about the holistic benefits of increasing movement throughout your day and that being separate from having a period of time where you do exercise such as going to the gym but just regularly having more movement throughout your day. So I thought I'd just also go through three steps (excuse the pun) of how to do that throughout your day.
So firstly choose what you're going to do.
It could be as simple as parking the other side of the car park when you get to work or when you get to the shops so that you have that walk.
One that's often said is to take the stairs instead of the lift.
It could be something like when you get home have a dance around to a song for five minutes.
Or do some squats whilst the kettle is boiling.
Whatever it might be, it can just be simple. Just choose a moment in time where you're just waiting or you're getting somewhere anyway and you could just increase that time or do something different whilst you're waiting.
Secondly make sure it's something you can measure.
At the end of the day you can say did I do that? Did I put the song on and dance around? Or did I park the other side of the car park? So you can measure it, if you've got a Fitbit or phone or something that measures your steps then set a target to increase your amount of steps, so that you know that you're increasing your movement throughout the day.
And then thirdly just choose one thing at a time.
Keep it simple for yourself. Don't say I'm going to do a whole list of different things if then that's not realistic and you end up just going back to your old habits, your old routine. Just choose one thing and start with that and then once that's the habit, choose another thing and add that to it. Like I always say keep it simple.
