In this simple steps video I'm looking at the topic of gratitude and how to introduce it into your life and the holistic benefits.
Neuroscience and psychology have shown the transformational benefits both in your career and in your personal life by being more grateful. When we see the appreciation in things that triggers our neurotransmitters, increases the growth of them, they release dopamine, serotonin and that's what brings us that feeling of happiness and contentment.
The more we feel happy and content, the more we see positive things rather than negative things. And it's this positive feedback loop that once you start with gratitude you just see more and more and more.
So three benefits I'm going to look at;
The first one, physically it can boost your immune system.
If you're stressed then the sympathetic nervous system is being activated and that's where you're in the fight and flight response and that's not a healthy place to consistently be in. But the parasympathetic nervous system and the sympathetic can't be both activated at the same time. So experiencing gratitude activates the parasympathetic nervous system, which is your rest and repair and therefore your immune system is boosted.
So not only do you feel less stressed but you're also less likely to be getting ill.
A second reason is self belief, self-confidence and self-worth.
I recommend that people not only be grateful for things they have, their circumstances, people in their life, but also to be grateful for themselves and their own characteristics. Initially people can find that to be selfish or egotistical.
Then my third point is that it can improve relationships.
This is linked on from the second point, not only because our relationships are in some way a reflection of our own relationship with ourselves, so improving yourself will also improve your outer relationships. But also the more that you have an appreciation for other people, and awareness of their situation rather than picking on the negatives and just seeing that perspective, the greater your communication and therefore your relationship is going to be.
There are so many more benefits but as usual, I keep it simple and I like to choose three; so immune system, self-worth and your relationships. That’s three great reasons to start being more grateful.
